Did you know?
Washington was the first state to celebrate Father’s Day. According to the Library of Congress, the idea for Father’s Day is attributed to Sonora Dodd, who was raised by her father. Her father was born in June, so she encouraged churches in Spokane to honor fathers that month. And so the first organized celebration of Father’s Day took place in 1910.
Father’s Day was officially recognized as a United States holiday in 1972.
Father’s Day is celebrated in 111 countries, but not celebrated on the same day of the year. While many countries will celebrate on June 19 this year, other countries like Australia and New Zealand celebrate Father’s Day on the first Sunday in September.
Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers in our lives!
