An estimated 31,720 Americans, including 560 vehicle-related deaths in Mississippi in the first nine months of 2021, per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is a 12 percent increase over projections for the first nine months of 2020.
In other studies, the New York Times found that vehicle deaths rose 17.5 percent between the summer of 2019 and the summer of 2021. Traffic experts hoped for lower amounts given the nearly empty roads early in the pandemic.
Increased accidents involving driving impairments, such as drunk driving, road rage, and distracted driving, are cited as potential causes for much of the increase. And, studies have found that driving while using a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent.
With these increased incidents, the U.S. Department of Transportation has unveiled a new National Roadway Safety Strategy to address the national crisis.
