September is National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the devastating impact of spinal cord injuries (SCIs) and to raise awareness about the legal rights and options available to those affected.

There are approximately 17,810 new spinal cord injuries each year in the U.S., according to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC). As of recent reports, an estimated 296,000 people in the U.S. live with a SCI. About 78% of SCI victims are male. This is largely due to higher participation in high-risk activities such as contact sports and labor-intensive jobs.

Spinal cord injuries can happen suddenly and have lasting effects, from partial to complete paralysis, loss of bodily function, and chronic pain. These injuries are often caused by accidents such as:

Car, Truck, or Motorcycle Accidents: motor vehicle accidents account for about 38 percent of all SCIs, making them the most common cause.

Slip and Fall Accidents: Falls from heights or even a simple trip on unsafe property can lead to serious spinal injuries. Falls, especially in older adults, account for 32 percent of SCIs.

Workplace Accidents: Construction sites and other physically demanding jobs carry a higher risk of spinal cord injuries.

Sports-Related Injuries: High-impact sports can cause damage to the spine, resulting in temporary or permanent impairment. About eight percent of SCIs are due to sports injuries, usually with contact sports like football and hockey.

Regardless of the cause, the effects are life-altering, and victims often face long-term medical treatment, rehabilitation, and lifestyle changes that come with a heavy financial burden.

We understand the physical, emotional, and financial toll this injury can take, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
