The tradition of setting off fireworks on the Fourth of July dates all the way back to the first anniversary celebration in Philadelphia in 1777.
Robert G. Heft designed the 50-star flag in history class in 1958. He was 16 years old at the time. His design became the official flag in 1960.
Studies by NPR show that Americans spend billions on fireworks each year, which accounted for the 10,200 firework-related emergency room visits across the county in 2022.
The U.S. Independence Day is celebrated abroad as well. According to the BBC, the Rebild Festival, arguably the largest Independence Day celebration outside of the U.S., takes place on July 4th, in the Rebild region of Denmark. The festival is a symbol of friendship between the two countries.
